Making Friends A funny thing happened to me on the way home last night. I had just arrived back from the big smoke and, as one does when glad to back in home territory, I circumnavigated the round-a-bout off the expressway into the exit Street with considerable enthusiasm ... then flicked immediately right into another with the intention of taking the shortcut through the industrial yards direct to my home. You know - the way I sneak in the back door when I think the games afoot. The roundabout was deserted with only one car turning into the top of the street heading in my direction. Back to 2nd gear, generous throttle, the back moved out nicely around 3 segments of the roundabout - out into the short dash and a quick dab to set up the tight right into the shortcut. It was one of my better efforts and I was quietly applauding my proficiency when the red & blue lights lit up behind. Yeah - the car coming towards me was a mufti. Damn! I was tempted to make a dash and am certain the car was capable of getting me up the ally, up the home street and into my drive before the plod made it along first bit ... it had worked before. No - not this time. The car is rather unique and would be extremely recognizable in tomorrows daylight. Usually I get out when I'm making new friends. This time it was too much effort so I stayed belted in and wondered which inner pocket hid my licence. A rather breathless young man greeted me and quickly orbited the car shining his torch hither and thither. "You indicated entering the roundabout but didn't on the exit". He said. "I suspect it's a bit difficult when applying opposite lock" he added. I contemplated a number of answers and chose, "Have you ever had the inexpressible pleasure of driving a car like this?" "No". "Well I sincerely hope you do and in fact it would be quite possible on Sunday. Why not give me a call and take a ride in this one. Hang on a moment and I'll find you my card". And that’s the story of how I made a new friend. He's coming to take the Arial Atom for a spin on Sunday |
